Youth in Philanthropy (YIP)

From where will the next generation of philanthropists come?
The obvious answer is from the youth of North America and the
world. The same answer applies to the next generation of
ethical fundraisers. The New Jersey Chapter of the Association
of Fundraising Professionals (AFP-NJ Chapter) is committed to
the development of the next generation of fundraisers. We
understand that in order to ensure that there will be interest
in the nonprofit sector and fundraising in the future, young
people must be exposed to philanthropy in a meaningful way at a
young age.
To that end the AFP-NJ Chapter offers a teaching program
and a career based program designed to promote and
encourage the involvement of high school students in
philanthropy and the profession of ethical fundraising.
Teaching Program
Making a World of Good©, A Hands-On Learning Experience
with Philanthropy, Fundraising & Making a Difference is
a 12-unit high school curriculum that can be used effectively in
grades 7-12. The curriculum was designed to be flexible and can
be taught as an in-school class, an after-school activity or a
weekend project. The curriculum includes:
• Complete lesson plans
• a Philanthropy Glossary
• a Teacher’s Manual with sample
handouts
• Ideas for teachers and
facilitators
Career Based Program
Careers in Fundraising presents fundraising as a career
option to high school juniors and seniors. Developed
specifically for AFP chapters, Careers in Fundraising is
designed to engage high school students in exploring the
exciting and rewarding profession of fundraising. It is
important for high school students to learn about this potential
career path in public service before they get to
college – as it may influence their choices during their
collegiate years. (Click here to read the

Fundraiser).
