Scholarship Procedures and Forms

Procedures:

Purpose: To provide access to educational opportunities provided by the New Jersey Chapter of the Association of Fundraising Professionals (AFP) for AFP members and non-members who can demonstrate organizational need and financial need.

Eligible Educational Programs:  Scholarship funds may be directed to: Conference on Philanthropy, Whitley Lecture Series, First Course on Fundraising, Survey Course on Fundraising, CFRE Preparation Workshops, Monthly fundraising workshops, luncheon programs and other educational programs offered by AFP-NJ.

Amount Awarded: AFP-NJ believes that the applicant must have some financial participation in the cost of any educational program they are awarded a scholarship to attend. The average amount will be based on approximately 50% of the best member rate advertised.  The Scholarship Chair has the authority to recommend larger awards if funds are available and the applicant can demonstrate extraordinary or compelling need.

Procedures for Educational Program Scholarships (Typical Award Varies Based on Cost of Program)

Applicants request and complete a Educational Program Scholarship Application, designate the program they desire to attend and its scheduled date. The completed form will be mailed or faxed to the Scholarship Chair who will enter the scholarship applicant on the Scholarship spreadsheet and screen the applications for eligibility. He passes those applicants who meet eligibility criteria on to the Chapter President or their Designee for over-sight review and final authorization of the awards.  The Chapter President or designee will inform the Scholarship Chair if he/she concurs with the recommendation.  The Scholarship Chair will indicate this approval on the spreadsheet and email it to the Chapters Association Manager. The Scholarship Chair will notify individual recipients and tell them to fax their Educational Program Registration form to the Chapter office. The Association Manager will invoice scholarship winners for the balance of the best member rate as indicated on the registration form.

NOTE: An individual will be eligible for consideration only once annually for a Educational Program Scholarship and must agree to pay the difference between the actual cost of the educational opportunity and the scholarship awarded.

Eligibility must meet the following criteria:

  1. Documentation of inability of the organization to pay the full cost of the educational program.

  2. Be an agency staff member or volunteer with responsibility for raising funds as a part of his or her job description.

  3. Be employed by or volunteer for a not-for-profit organization without a significant, dedicated development budget.

  4. Preference will be given to organizations which have no development professionals on staff.

  5. Preference will be given to those applicants whose organizations can document the greatest need of development support.

  6. In the case that the donor / grantor set criteria as part of their scholarship support, preference will be given to applicants meeting such criteria, e.g.: minorities or those who represent certain urban areas, etc

  7. Preference will be given to those who have never received an educational scholarship from AFP-NJ.

  8. Preference will be given to organizations with budgets of less than $1 million.

  9. Scholarship funds will not be reimbursed to an organization which has already registered and paid for the educational program.

Procedures for AFP NJ Conference on Philanthropy (COP) Scholarships (Typical Award $100.00)

Applicants request an application, complete it, and return it to the Scholarship Chair who will enter the scholarship applicant on the Scholarship spreadsheet and screen the applications for eligibility. He/she passes those applicants who meet eligibility criteria on to the designee for over-sight review and final authorization of the awards.  The designee will inform the Scholarship Chair if he/she concurs with the recommendation.  The Scholarship Chair will indicate the approval on the spreadsheet and email it to The Association Manager. The Scholarship Chair will pass a list of award recipients on to the COP Scholarship Chair who will notify individual recipients and tell them to fax their COP registration form to the Chapter office. The Association Manager will invoice the scholarship winners for the balance of the Early Bird Rate indicated for members. He/She will invoice the scholarship winners for the balance of the best Early Bird Rate indicated for members.  The COP Scholarship Chair will keep the COP Chair informed of scholarship applications received and scholarships awarded.

NOTE: An individual will be eligible only once for COP Scholarships and must agree to pay the difference between the actual cost of the COP and the scholarship award provided.

  1. Documentation of inability of the organization to pay the full cost of the COP.

  2. Be an agency staff member or volunteer with responsibility for raising funds as a part of his or her job description.

  3. Be employed by or volunteer for a not-for-profit organization without a significant, dedicated development budget.

  4. Preference will be given to organizations which have no development professionals on staff.

  5. Preference will be given to those applicants whose organizations can document the greatest need of development support.

  6. Preference will be given to organizations with budgets of less than $1 million.

  7. In the case that the donor / grantor set criteria as part of their scholarship support, preference will be given to applicants meeting such criteria, e.g.: minorities or those who represent certain urban areas, etc

  8. Scholarship funds will not be reimbursed to an organization which has already registered and / or paid for COP admission.

  9. NOTE:  Scholarship recipients are expected to schedule volunteer services the day of the event and/or the night before.

Eligibility Criteria Required for Increased COP Scholarship Awards (Typical Award $150.00)

When sufficient funds are available, the Chapter may be able to offer special reduced Conference on Philanthropy (COP) registration fees and increased scholarship awards certain organizations who can demonstrate exceptional need. Applicant organizations must have budgets under $1,000,000 and documentation of exceptional financial need (Audited Financial Statements, IRS 990, etc) and who fit one or more of the following criteria:

a.       Documented recent or imminent loss of critical program funding and the need to obtain funds from other sources to continue the critical program (e.g.: Letters from funders documenting discontinuation of program funding, the reason for discontinuation and the need for continuing the program with other funds.

b.       No paid development staff, (e.g.: program manager or staff write grants)

c.       One person development shops without dedicated development budgets

d.       Starting a development program

One person from a qualifying agency will be eligible for a special reduced rate.

  • Both AFP NJ members and qualifying non-members will be eligible for a reduced member rate of $175.00 and may qualify for up to a $150.00 scholarship award. ($25.00 balance remaining due)

  • NOTE: These special rates will not be given to an applicant if any other representative of the agency is already registered for the conference and/or has received the customary $100 COP scholarship, except in exceptional cases.
